July 9, 2011 Opening In Ashburn, VA!

Wings:  A Collaborative Public Arts Project

The Broadlands Nature Center is the very first venue for a life-sized ceramic sculpture created for the community by local artist, Rosalba Negrete.  Saturday, July 9, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM, rain or shine, please attend the family friendly opening celebration at The Nature Center Pavillion!  There will be music, refreshments, art, children's activities, and more.

The sculpture is a figure with wings because as humans, we all strive to soar.  Applied to the wings and figure are descriptions of what art means to several local painters, writers, actors, musicians, potters, sculptors, weavers, photographers and dancers.  What emotion does this art evoke in YOU?  You will have from July 1 to November 1, 2011 to explore this question.  Then, the art will move on to its second venue our county.

Rosalba has dual citizenship in Spain and Chile, where public art is very prevalent.  She observes "Public art promotes social history and culture.  It fosters interactions between diverse groups of people.  Dialog that builds the cultural identity for the community motivates others to produce unique collaborative art.  This project is my gift to Loudoun County."

Wings Objective

Public art is a privileged place to take back your social history and culture.

It is a place where there can be a diverse group of people who interact with the art.

Individuals can start a dialog with themselves and with others.

This interaction builds the cultural identity for the community.

Yet, it is only a fragment of this identity. It is the part that involves the interaction of artists sharing their reflection of the cultural identity. It is important.

Leesburg ceramics artist and teacher, Rosalba Negrete introduces a proposal for a collaborative public art project, “Wings”. Her concept is to create a life-sized ceramic sculpture. It is a figure with wings – because as humans we all strive to soar. Inscribed in the wings and the figure, will be descriptions of what art means to a diverse range of artists in the community including painters, writers, actors, musicians, potters, sculptors, weavers, photographers and dancers.  The purpose of this sculpture is to motivate the individuals who see it. Their reaction will move them with either a negative or positive response. It does not matter which way they respond since the response is what will motivate them in a different direction because it is new to their environment.
